Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is more than just an airline — it’s a symbol of Pakistan’s aviation history, national pride, and resilience. Founded before Pakistan even became an independent state, PIA has played a pivotal role in connecting the country to the world for nearly eight decades.️

From Humble Beginnings to National Hero

The roots of PIA trace back to 1946, when Orient Airways began operations. After Pakistan emerged as a new nation in 1947, the airline transformed into Pakistan International Airlines in 1955, quickly becoming a source of national pride and global connection.

In its early years, PIA pioneered international air travel for Pakistan, launching its first route from Karachi to London via Rome and Cairo. It also gained jet aircraft like the Boeing 707 in 1960, modernizing its fleet and expanding its reach.

A Global Network and Vital Connectivity

For decades, PIA operated an extensive international and domestic route network. Its flights have connected major cities in Pakistan like Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Quetta, while international destinations included the Middle East, Europe, North America, and Asia.

Although some routes were curtailed over the years due to economic and regulatory challenges, PIA continues to serve key international hubs including the Middle East and Europe — and even resumed flights to the United Kingdom after a five-year suspension.

📉Challenges and Setbacks

PIA’s story has also been troubled. Over time, rising operational costs, overstaffing, management weaknesses, and political interference weakened its competitiveness. As a result, the airline struggled financially, burdened by debts and repeated government bailouts.
